The River Carries Us Home

Laura Graves

The River Carries Us Home is a vibrant exploration of water, land, community and belonging. Laura Graves creates a landscape that feels less like a literal view of a particular place and more like a living map—one in which rivers, roots, mountains, dwellings and the rhythms of the natural world are inseparably connected.

Water dominates the composition. Across the lower half of the painting, broad bands of turquoise, cobalt, aqua, green and white move horizontally across the canvas in continuous waves. Each current follows its own path, yet all travel together. Graves gives the river a remarkable sense of movement without depicting it realistically; instead, colour and line become the language of flowing water.

Above the river, the land rises in layers.

The shoreline is filled with brilliant red and blue organic forms, golden circles, branching white lines and smaller patterned shapes. These passages can suggest stones, earth, roots, waterways or the living systems contained within the land. Graves leaves enough ambiguity for the viewer to discover different possibilities rather than prescribing a single interpretation.

One of the most compelling details is the way roots appear throughout the painting. On the left, the roots of a tree are clearly visible beneath the surface, spreading downward into the earth. Elsewhere, white branching forms repeat within the red areas of the landscape. The visual echo creates an important idea: what sustains life is often hidden beneath what we see.

Across the horizon are groups of tipis, their triangular forms repeated on either side of the composition. They establish human presence within the landscape, but importantly, they do not dominate it. They sit comfortably among the mountains, trees and waterways, becoming another element within the larger natural environment.

Behind them, dark blue forms rise like distant forests and mountain ridges. Above those mountains, a glowing circular form emerges at the horizon in layers of yellow, orange, red and white. It can be read as sun, moon or something more symbolic—a source of warmth, direction and continuity appearing where land and sky meet.

The uppermost portion of the painting returns again to movement. Waves of green, turquoise, blue and yellow travel across the sky, punctuated by circular forms and small star-like bursts. Graves deliberately blurs the visual distinction between water and sky. Both flow. Both contain rhythm. Both seem to carry energy across the painting.

This repetition is one of the most beautiful aspects of the work. The curves of the river below are echoed in the sky above. Branches become roots; roots resemble waterways. Circular forms appear in the heavens and again throughout the landscape. Everything seems to belong to the same visual language.

The title The River Carries Us Home reflects that sense of connection. Rivers have always been more than geographical features. They provide water and food, establish routes through the land and connect communities across great distances. In this painting, the river feels almost like a thread running through generations—a pathway that leads both outward into the world and back toward home.

There is an appealing warmth to the idea of home here. Graves does not define it as a building or a single fixed point. Home appears instead as a relationship: to water, land, community, memory and the natural systems that sustain life.

Her colour palette gives these ideas an unmistakably contemporary energy. Electric turquoise and deep blue sit beside lime green, ochre, brilliant red and warm yellow, all contained by confident black outlines. The strong graphic quality makes the painting immediately engaging from a distance, while its smaller patterns, roots and internal markings reward a much closer look.

At 24" x 36", The River Carries Us Home has wonderful presence without overwhelming a space. Its horizontal orientation reinforces the movement of the river and allows the eye to travel naturally across the landscape before returning again to the extraordinary layers of water below.

Laura Graves is an emerging Indigenous artist from Castlegar, British Columbia, whose work is developing a distinctive visual language of bold colour, flowing forms, wildlife, landscape and interconnected natural systems. Across her paintings, there is a recurring invitation to look beyond the obvious—to consider not simply the tree, river or mountain before us, but the relationships connecting them.

At Peachland Village Art Studio, we are proud to showcase emerging Indigenous artists alongside established local, Canadian and international artists. We want the Studio to be a place where collectors can discover artists, learn the stories surrounding their work and have the opportunity to follow their creative journeys. The River Carries Us Home beautifully represents that vision: joyful and striking at first glance, yet filled with layers of connection, movement and meaning that invite the viewer to return again and again.
