Johnny Mukwa’s Sunning at Dusk is a powerful reflection on kinship, balance, and the quiet wisdom found in nature. At the center of the composition sits a majestic bear, rendered in rich shades of violet and lavender, resting peacefully before a radiant crimson sun. Flanking the bear are two stylized grouse, their forms alive with flowing patterns, vibrant blues, warm earth tones, and intricate internal designs. Together, the three figures create a harmonious circle of presence and connection, united beneath the glow of the setting sun.
 
Mukwa’s signature Woodland style is immediately recognizable through its bold black formlines, luminous colour palette, and symbolic X-ray imagery that reveals the spirit residing within each living being. This peaceful posture embodies the Bear Clan’s role as protectors and caretakers within the community.
 
The grouse are equally meaningful. Long respected within Anishinaabe culture as providers and symbols of resilience, they represent the gifts of the land and the reciprocal relationship between people and nature. Here, they stand not as prey, but as companions. Alongside the bear, they share the final warmth of the day, reminding us that all beings participate in the same cycle of life.
 
The setting sun becomes a powerful symbol within the work. Rather than representing an ending, it symbolizes reflection, gratitude, and renewal. Its vibrant red glow envelops the animals in a shared circle of light, suggesting that despite their differences, all living creatures are connected by the same source of life and spirit.
 
Throughout the painting, Mukwa communicates a central Anishinaabe teaching: strength is not measured by dominance, but by balance, respect, and coexistence. The absence of conflict allows the viewer to focus on the deeper message of harmony among all relations. Bear, grouse, land, sky, and sun exist together in a state of mutual respect, each playing an essential role within the larger circle of creation.
