One Shot

Jordan Perkins
Acrylic on Canvas
40" x 48"

One Shot captures a single explosive moment of movement—a red fox launching itself through a winter landscape with complete commitment. Jordan Perkins freezes the animal in midair, its body stretched forward, paws tucked beneath it and magnificent tail trailing behind. There is no hesitation in the pose. Whatever has caught the fox's attention, it has decided to go for it.

That sense of absolute commitment gives the title One Shot its charm. The painting can be read literally as one perfectly timed leap, but there is also something wonderfully human about it: sometimes you get one opportunity, one opening, one shot—and you jump.

Perkins makes the fox the undeniable star of the composition. Its coat burns against the dark background in brilliant layers of orange, scarlet, copper, gold and cream. Rather than carefully smoothing those colours together, he allows individual strokes and marks to remain visible. The result is fur that seems charged with energy, almost vibrating against the cold night surrounding it.

The expression is particularly fun. The fox is not presented as a pristine wildlife-study subject. Its narrowed eyes, concentrated face and tucked front paws give it character. There is determination in the leap, but also just enough exaggeration to make the viewer smile. It is exactly the sort of personality that distinguishes Perkins' animal paintings—he doesn't simply paint wildlife; he seems to catch them having a moment.

Behind the fox, the atmosphere becomes almost cosmic. Deep midnight blues and blacks are interrupted by an extraordinary sweep of violet, magenta, turquoise, orange and gold. It can suggest northern light, reflected winter light or simply the artist letting colour take over. Whatever interpretation the viewer chooses, the effect is dramatic. The darkness makes the fiery fox appear even brighter, while scattered flecks of colour and white move across the canvas like snow, stars and sparks all at once.

The snow beneath provides a beautiful counterpoint. Perkins builds the winter ground from white, pale blue, lavender and touches of pink, broken by dark grasses and their elongated shadows. It feels unmistakably cold without becoming colourless. Even the snow participates in the energy of the painting.

Compositionally, One Shot is all about anticipation. The fox occupies the upper right of the canvas while the open snow stretches beneath and ahead of it. Because the animal has not yet landed, Perkins leaves the story unfinished. We are suspended in precisely the same instant as the fox. What happens next exists just beyond the painting.

That unanswered question is part of what makes the piece so engaging. The viewer instinctively understands the movement and begins completing the story. Is the fox hunting? Playing? Did it see something beneath the snow? Will this beautifully ambitious leap end in triumph or in a face full of snow? Perkins doesn't tell us—and the painting is more entertaining because of it.

At 40" x 48", One Shot has substantial visual impact. The brilliant orange fox immediately commands attention from across a room, while closer viewing reveals the layered brushwork, splattered colour, subtle shifts within the snow and the surprising complexity of the dark background. It is bold enough to anchor a large space but playful enough never to feel overly serious.

Jordan Perkins has developed a distinctive approach to wildlife painting that combines recognizable subjects with contemporary colour, energetic mark-making and his own larger-than-life sense of humour. His substantial social-media following has allowed collectors to see not only the finished paintings but also the personality and enjoyment behind their creation. One Shot feels particularly representative of that spirit: energetic, fearless, colourful and just a little mischievous.

At Peachland Village Art Studio, we believe original art should create a connection—sometimes through beauty, sometimes through emotion and sometimes simply because it makes you stop, look and smile. We are proud to showcase Jordan Perkins alongside an evolving collection of exceptional local, Canadian and international artists. One Shot captures exactly what we want visitors to discover here: original art with craftsmanship, personality and a story that continues long after you have walked away from the canvas.
