In Mermaids, William Jones invites viewers to pause and look beyond the surface of the water. Sunlight dances across the waves, creating shifting reflections, hidden depths, and fleeting forms that seem to appear and disappear with every ripple. What begins as a study of moving water becomes an imaginative exploration of mystery and possibility. Are those shapes beneath the surface merely waves and shadows, or could they be the tails of mermaids gliding just out of sight?
 
Originally created as an exercise in capturing depth, movement, and light on water, the painting evolved as the artist stepped back and noticed forms emerging naturally within the composition. The suggestion of unseen creatures transformed the work from a technical study into a visual story—one that celebrates wonder, imagination, and the enduring human tendency to discover magic within the natural world.
Rich layers of blue, silver, and reflected light create a sense of motion and depth, drawing the viewer into the ever-changing surface of the sea. Sparkling highlights dance across the water like scattered stars, blurring the boundary between reality and fantasy. The painting encourages viewers to slow down, observe closely, and allow their imagination to wander into the unknown.
 
As with much of Jones’ work, water serves as both subject and metaphor. It reflects not only the world around us but also the stories, dreams, and possibilities we carry within ourselves. Mermaids captures that fleeting moment when reality and imagination meet, leaving us to wonder what mysteries may lie just beneath the surface.
