Set against a luminous blue background, the painting immediately draws the viewer into its symmetrical design. Four brilliantly colored hummingbirds, their turquoise wings outstretched and their patterned forms glowing with life, converge around a central blossom. The composition feels ceremonial in nature, as though each bird has gathered in a sacred act of protection, gratitude, and renewal.
 
For Mukwa, these hummingbirds carry deeply personal meaning. Each bird represents one of his four children, transforming the painting into both a spiritual reflection and a heartfelt tribute to family. Within Anishinaabe teachings, the hummingbird (nenookaasi) is regarded as a messenger of joy, healing, resilience, and hope. Despite its small size, it possesses remarkable strength and endurance, travelling great distances while carrying the energy of renewal. Hummingbirds are often associated with the pursuit of mino-bimaadiziwin—living a good and balanced life—and serve as reminders to seek beauty, gratitude, and sweetness even during difficult times.
 
Mukwa expresses these teachings through the powerful visual language of the Woodland School. Bold black outlines, flowing organic forms, and intricate internal patterns reveal the spiritual energy that exists within all living things. The mirrored arrangement of the birds creates a rhythmic, almost ceremonial movement, while the central flower radiates outward as a symbol of life, family, community, and healing.
The rich colour palette of turquoise, violet, crimson, and gold brings a contemporary vibrancy to traditional teachings, allowing the work to feel both timeless and modern.
