Harvest Light
Ruala
Acrylic on Wood
40" x 30"
Harvest Light is a rich and luminous celebration of the vineyard at that fleeting point in the season when months of growth have reached their reward. In this substantial 40" x 30" acrylic on wood, Ruala brings the viewer extraordinarily close to a magnificent cluster of ripe grapes while allowing the vineyard beyond to dissolve into colour, light and atmosphere.
The grapes immediately command attention. Suspended heavily from the vine, they appear almost jewel-like, painted in layers of burgundy, plum, crimson, amber and deep violet. Ruala gives each grape its own character. Some catch brilliant flashes of sunlight, others remain partially hidden in shadow, and several seem almost translucent where warm golds and reds glow through their skins. Together they convey the weight, ripeness and abundance of fruit ready for harvest.
Above them, a mature branch stretches confidently across the composition. Its earthy browns and irregular form provide a strong natural anchor, while the enormous vine leaves create a canopy around the fruit. Their deep greens are crossed by lighter veins and touched with yellow, suggesting the subtle transition of the vineyard as summer begins to give way to harvest.
Beyond this intimate foreground, Ruala opens the painting into an expansive vineyard. Rows of vines disappear into the distance, but rather than rendering every leaf literally, she allows the landscape to break into hundreds of touches of green, yellow and cream. The effect is wonderfully atmospheric. We understand the rows and contours of the vineyard while simultaneously experiencing the shimmer of sunlight moving across them.
Light is truly the second subject of Harvest Light.
It enters from the left and travels diagonally through the painting, catching the grapes, illuminating sections of the vineyard and casting long, expressive shadows across the earth. Ruala's handling of these passages gives the work a feeling of warmth that is almost physical. It evokes that particular golden light of late summer and early autumn when the sun sits lower, shadows lengthen and a vineyard seems to glow from within.
There is also a wonderful shift in scale. The enormous cluster of grapes places us almost beneath the vine, close enough to imagine reaching out and touching the fruit.
Yet behind it stretches an entire cultivated landscape. This contrast turns a familiar vineyard scene into something more intimate: the single cluster becomes representative of the entire harvest.
The choice of wood as the painting surface adds another dimension to the work. Its solidity suits the strength of the composition and complements Ruala's generous application of acrylic, allowing her layers of colour and energetic marks to possess a tangible presence. From across a room, Harvest Light reads as a dramatic vineyard landscape. Viewed closely, it becomes an exploration of individual brushstrokes, reflections and remarkable variations of colour.
Originally from Romania, Ruala brings the foundations of her Eastern European artistic training to a style that has become distinctly her own. Her paintings can be found in collections around the world, yet today she has made her home in Fruitvale, British Columbia, where she paints from her studio while also operating a small coffee shop and art gallery. That combination of European artistic tradition and her life in British Columbia gives her work an appealing sense of both sophistication and warmth.
Harvest Light feels particularly at home in the Okanagan. While it is not simply a portrait of a particular vineyard, its themes of vines, ripening fruit, sunlight and harvest resonate naturally with the landscape and culture of British Columbia wine country. It is a painting about abundance, but also about anticipation—the brief, beautiful moment when the growing is complete and the harvest is about to begin.
Ruala is represented exclusively by Peachland Village Art Studio. We are proud to bring her distinctive work to the Okanagan and to introduce collectors to an artist whose European training, international following and deeply personal approach to painting make her work immediately recognizable.
At Peachland Village Art Studio, we bring together exceptional local, Canadian and international artists, offering original works chosen not simply to fill a wall, but to bring character, beauty and a lasting story into the spaces in which they live.
