Frog Medicine
Artist: Johnny Mukwa
Medium: Acrylic on Birch Panel
In Frog Medicine, Johnny Mukwa reimagines the frog through the vibrant visual language of Woodland art, creating a powerful reflection on healing, renewal, and spiritual transformation. Set against a rich teal background, the frog emerges in layered aquas and greens, defined by flowing black form lines and intricate dotted details that bring both movement and energy to the composition.
The frog's elongated limbs and extended red tongue reach toward a circular medicine symbol, suggesting a connection between the physical and spiritual realms. Radiating patterns within the body evoke inner vitality, growth, and the unseen forces that guide personal transformation. The work balances stillness and motion, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on their own journeys of healing and renewal.
In Anishinaabe teachings, the frog (omakii) carries powerful medicine. As a being that moves between water and land, it symbolizes cleansing, adaptability, and the ability to navigate different worlds. Its song announces the arrival of spring rains, marking a season of growth, abundance, and new beginnings. The frog is also regarded as a helper and protector, particularly in matters of emotional healing and spiritual well-being. Its presence reminds us to honor water as a sacred source of life and to release what no longer serves us.
Through bold colour, symbolic imagery, and cultural storytelling, Frog Medicine celebrates the enduring relationship between nature, healing, and Indigenous knowledge. The work serves as both a visual meditation and a reminder of the transformative power found in renewal, balance, and respect for the natural world.
