Hidden deep within British Columbia's Purcell Mountains, a remote alpine lake rests beneath a breathtaking amphitheatre of ancient hanging glaciers. Towering cliffs cradle cascading icefields carved over thousands of years, their quiet presence reflected in the turquoise waters below. Echoes of Ice captures the stillness, scale, and timeless beauty of a place where nature gently reminds us how small we are—and how fortunate we are to witness it.
Artists Statement
There are places that ask something of us before they reveal their beauty. The journey to the Lake of the Hanging Glacier was one of those places.
Long before I lifted a paintbrush, I earned this experience one step at a time. The climb tested my body, the weather tested my resolve, and the mountains reminded me how small I really was. When I finally stepped over the last rise, I stopped. Before me stood an immense amphitheatre of towering stone and ancient hanging glaciers encircling a still turquoise lake. It felt timeless.
The cliffs, the ice, the silence... everything seemed to exist on a scale far beyond human life.
In that moment, I wasn't simply looking at the landscape—I felt completely immersed within it. Then, sometime during the night, I heard it. A deep crack echoed across the valley as one of the glaciers released another piece of itself into the lake below. Hidden by darkness, I never saw the moment. I not only heard it, I felt it—a low rumble that rolled beneath my tent, travelled through the earth beneath me, and settled deep within my soul. That moment has stayed with me ever since.
Echoes of Ice is not simply a painting of a glacier. It is a reminder that some of life's most extraordinary moments aren't the ones we photograph. They are the ones we carry quietly within us long after we've returned home.
