Danu and Crow at Sea
William Jones
Acrylic on Canvas
In Danu and Crow at Sea, William Jones continues the unfolding story of two enduring companions as they journey through Tír na nÓg, the Celtic Land of Eternal Youth. Invited by the goddess Danu, Crow travels across this mythical realm by land, sea, and sky, gathering stories, sharing wisdom, and discovering the interconnectedness of all living things.
In this vibrant chapter of their adventure, Danu and Crow accompany a vessel of little people as it navigates sparkling waters toward a Festival of Flowers—a celebration of beauty, renewal, and community. Amid rolling waves and luminous skies, the travelers move together toward a place of gathering and belonging, guided by trust, friendship, and mutual care. The mushroom boat becomes a symbol of safe passage, reminding us that journeys are often enriched when shared with others.
The painting also marks an important stage in the artist’s ongoing exploration of water as both subject and metaphor. Through dynamic waves, reflected light, and shimmering highlights, Jones deepens his study of the sea’s rhythms and energy while exploring how light can bring vitality, movement, and emotion to a composition. The sparkling surface of the water suggests a living presence, carrying both the travelers and the stories they share.
Rooted in both Indigenous and Celtic storytelling traditions, Danu and Crow at Sea reflects one of the artist’s core values: community. The work celebrates the strength found in supporting one another, the comfort of knowing there is a place where we belong, and the profound human need to gather, contribute, and journey together. The Festival of Flowers serves as a reminder that communities flourish when individuals come together to celebrate, share, and care for one another.
Rich with symbolism, narrative, and imagination, the painting invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys and the companions who help guide them along the way. Through myth and storytelling, Jones reminds us that life’s ever-changing waters become easier to navigate when we travel with purpose, connection, and a sense of belonging.
