Between Earth and Sky

Between Earth and Sky is a richly layered celebration of interconnectedness—a painting in which land, water, wildlife, plant life and the unseen energy of the natural world appear to exist as parts of one continuous living system.
At the centre is a great blue heron, its wings extended across the composition. The bird feels almost suspended between worlds. Its body occupies the landscape above the water, while its long legs transform into branching roots that reach deep beneath the surface. It is a beautiful visual idea: what we see above ground is only one part of the story. Beneath it lies another world of connection, nourishment and memory.
The heron becomes both bird and tree, creature and landscape.
Across its body, delicate fields of dots form circular and flowing patterns. These markings create a sense of movement and energy, almost as though currents are travelling through the bird rather than simply around it. The eye is continually led from one pattern to another, reinforcing the feeling that everything within the painting is connected.
Above, the composition opens into a woodland filled with deer. Their warm earth tones contrast with the blues and greens below, while the dotted patterns continue through their bodies and surroundings. The trees arch across the upper portion of the painting, their golden leaves creating a canopy over the animals beneath.
Water moves through the middle of the work like a lifeline. Small fish inhabit the green and turquoise passages surrounding the heron, while another large bird moves through the blue sky above. The repetition of animals at different levels—the fish below, the heron between land and water, the deer on the earth and the bird overhead—creates a sense of an entire ecosystem existing together.
The lower portion of the painting takes us somewhere we don't normally get to see. The heron's legs become roots extending through layers of earth rendered in ochre, green, brown, blue and gold. Dotted patterns continue underground, suggesting that life does not stop at the surface. Roots, water, soil and living creatures remain connected through systems that may be invisible to us but are essential to everything above.
The artist's use of colour gives the work a wonderfully contemporary energy. Brilliant blues and turquoise dominate the composition, balanced by fresh greens, warm golds and earthy browns. Repeated dot work provides both decoration and visual rhythm, guiding the viewer through the painting and connecting its many individual elements.
There is an appealing sense of storytelling here without the painting insisting upon a single interpretation. Between Earth and Sky can be appreciated simply as a colourful celebration of wildlife, but its layers invite a deeper reading—one concerned with balance, belonging, the relationship between species and our shared dependence upon the land and water.
Painted in acrylic on acrylic, the work also has a natural material connection to its subject. At 24" x 36", it has enough scale for its bold shapes and brilliant colours to make an immediate impression, while the extraordinary amount of pattern and detail encourages much closer viewing.
As an emerging Indigenous artist from Castlegar, British Columbia, this artist brings a distinctive contemporary voice to Peachland Village Art Studio. We are delighted to welcome her work to the gallery and to provide a space where visitors can discover her developing body of work.
At Peachland Village Art Studio, we are proud to showcase emerging artists alongside established local, Canadian and international names. An important part of what we want the Studio to become is a place of discovery—where exceptional new voices can be seen, their stories can be shared, and collectors have the opportunity to connect with an artist's work early in their journey. Between Earth and Sky is exactly the kind of work we are excited to introduce: colourful and immediately engaging, yet filled with layers of detail and meaning that continue to reveal themselves the longer you look.
