Ascendant Journey is a powerful expression of connection, growth, and spiritual evolution, presented through Johnny Mukwa’s distinctive Woodland style. Created as a commissioned work for a private collection, this striking vertical composition unfolds like a living totem, guiding the viewer upward through a series of interconnected beings toward the radiant energy of Grandfather Sun.
 
Set against a rich cerulean backdrop that evokes both sky and water, four animals rise in harmonious succession: turtle, fox, fish, and deer. Rather than existing as separate forms, each figure flows seamlessly into the next through elegant lines and symbolic patterns, illustrating one of the most enduring Indigenous teachings—that all life is connected and that every being plays a role in sustaining the whole.
 
Mukwa’s masterful use of bold black form lines, vibrant colour fields, and intricate internal detailing reflects the visual language of the Woodland School while carrying his own contemporary voice. Turquoise, magenta, ochre, lavender, and crimson create a vibrant ceremonial palette, while delicate dot work and flowing motifs suggest the spiritual energy that resides within all living things.
 
Crowning the composition is a brilliant red sun whose flame-like rays illuminate the ascending figures below. In Anishinaabe teachings, Grandfather Sun is a source of life, warmth, wisdom, and spiritual guidance. Its presence serves as both destination and origin, reminding us that all creation exists within a greater circle of relationships.
 
The symbolism within Ascendant Journey speaks to the interconnected nature of existence. The turtle represents stability, endurance, and the foundation upon which life is built. The fox embodies intelligence, adaptability, and awareness. The fish symbolizes abundance, sustenance, and the life-giving waters. The deer represents gentleness, compassion, and spiritual sensitivity. Together, these beings create a visual pathway that reflects personal growth, community, and the ongoing journey toward understanding and balance.
 
Painted on birch panel, a material with deep cultural significance throughout Indigenous traditions, the work gains an additional layer of meaning. Birch has long served as a source of transportation, shelter, storytelling, medicine, and artistic expression. Here, it becomes the foundation for a contemporary work rooted in timeless teachings.
